NLC declares indefinite strike in Delta after Deputy Director was beaten to death by alleged hired goons

Saturday, September 26, 2026 - The Delta State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has declared an indefinite strike in the state following the d£ath of a Deputy Director in the Ministry of Secondary Education, Mr. Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda. 

The State NLC chairman, Goodluck Oforbruku, declared the strike on Friday, September 25, while addressing protesting civil servants at the Chike Edozien secretariat in Asaba. 

Adeda reportedly di£d on Thursday, September 24, 2026, following an altercation at the secretariat. 

The dec£ased civil servant reportedly di£d after he was tied up and beaten mercilessly by thugs allegedly on the orders of the another government worker. 

According to Guardian, "sources familiar with the incident alleged that the confrontation involved the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, and that the deceased was assaulted during the encounter. 

"The sources further alleged that during the encounter, Ashibogwu asked Adeda whether he knew him, to which the deputy director reportedly replied that he did not." 

The publication, however adds that "the allegation of assault could not be independently established, while there was no official confirmation linking the alleged confrontation directly to Adeda’s de@th." 

Adeda's de@th triggered tension among workers at the secretariat, with activities reportedly disrupted as staff demanded answers over the circumstances surrounding the incident. 

Workers at the State Secretariat in Asaba shut down the complex after the de@th of Adeda. 

The development paralysed official activities at the Prof. Chike Odozien Secretariat as workers, acting under the aegis of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), locked the entrances to the complex and insisted that no worker would return to duty until the government provided satisfactory assurances regarding their safety.
