Akwa Ibom announces plans to host cycling marathon in October

Thursday, September 24, 2026 -  Organizers of the La Reine Cycling Marathon have announced plans to host the maiden edition of the race in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, from October 26 to November 1, 2026.

The convener, Imabong Umoh, who disclosed this on Tuesday said the event was aimed at promoting wellness, fitness and healthy living beyond the spa.

She said, “For years, La Reine has promoted wellness, fitness and healthy living. Today, we are taking that mission from the spa room to the green environment of Uyo.

“The La Reine Cycling Marathon is more than a race. We are launching a movement that will redefine wellness and put Akwa Ibom on the global cycling map.”

Umoh said the project would also prove that Nigerian women can champion world-class sports initiatives, adding that the race is approved by the Cycling Federation of Nigeria

“The race is sanctioned by the Cycling Federation of Nigeria and affiliated to other national and International regulatory bodies with strict compliance to international standards”, she said.

The convener said the marathon would feature professional elite men and women categories, amateur, junior, intermediate and veterans’ fun ride, as well as special displays by skaters and power bikers.

She added that attractive cash prizes and wellness packages would be up for grabs, with details contained in the riders’ kits.

On safety, Umoh said the organisers were collaborating with the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police, the Ministry of Health and the state emergency services, with ambulances, road marshals and medical teams on standby while highlighting the route for the exercise.

“The route will be from Arise Park, through Nwaniba to Ring Road 3 to the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. It was 15km initially, but we are increasing it to 100km, four laps of 25km each for elite and amateur riders, while fun riders will do 25km and 10km”, she added.

She said the event aligns with the tourism agenda of Akwa Ibom Governor, Pastor Umo Eno and would attract participants from across Nigeria and beyond.

Umoh disclosed that the marathon would be an annual event, with plans to expand participation to all 36 states from next year.

In her remarks, Secretary of the Cycling Association of Akwa Ibom State, Stella Udi, said the Ministry of Sports has endorsed the race and would work with the organisers to promote cycling in the state.
