FUOYE suspends senior officials over alleged student extortion

Wednesday, June 17, 2026 - The Federal University Oye-Ekiti, FUOYE, has suspended a director, a deputy dean and the Students’ Union Government, SUG, president over allegations of unauthorised collection of money from students.

The development was disclosed in a statement signed by the university’s Registrar, Mr Mufutau A. Ibrahim.

According to the statement, the affected officials are Mr Olanrewaju Patrick Ogunjobi, Director of the Directorate of Educational Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Dr Banji Rildwan Olaleye, Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Support Services; and the SUG President, Mr James Iyanuoluwa Adio.

The university said management received a petition from an official of the Students’ Union Government alleging that N1,000 was collected from each 100-level student for practical sessions under the Directorate.

“In the interest of fairness and in accordance with the principles of natural justice, Management constituted a Preliminary Fact-Finding Committee to look into the allegations,” the registrar stated.

According to the statement, all individuals named in the petition appeared before the committee and were given the opportunity to respond to the allegations.

The university alleged that Ogunjobi authorised and collected the N1,000 levy from affected students without approval from the Senate, management, or through the institution’s approved payment procedures, and that Olaleye participated in the collection process despite his position within the university’s Student Affairs structure.

Management also alleged that the SUG president was indirectly involved in the matter.

“It was alleged that he participated in the sharing of an initial sum and later demanded the return of funds, resulting in the transfer of N700,000 into his personal bank account,” the statement said.

FUOYE said the three officials have been suspended pending the outcome of full disciplinary proceedings.

The university described the allegations as contrary to its campaign against corruption and extortion, stressing that the institution would not tolerate actions capable of damaging its image.

“Management wishes to reiterate its unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and discipline within the university.

“The university will not tolerate the extortion of students, abuse of office, financial impropriety, or corruption in any form,” the registrar added.
