Thursday, May 21, 2026 - Actor-turned-politician, Desmond Elliott, has rejected the results from the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Surulere 1 constituency in the House of Assembly, alleging intimidation of his supporters at the venue.
The primary took place today May 20 at the Paddington mini
stadium on Western Avenue and saw his main opponent, Bakarat Bakare, backed by
the state and Federal government officials being declared winner of the
primary.
Speaking at the venue of the primary Elliot said he had made
several attempts to get electoral officers to allow his supporters access to
the polling area, but claimed the requests were ignored.
“And of
course, in all zones, they’ve been intimidating and stopping us. I want to
officially announce my withdrawal from this particular race. This is my ward.
If you go outside, those are my people outside” he said
He further alleged that many of his supporters were barred
from entering the polling venue despite repeated appeals to officials
overseeing the process.
“They’ve not
been allowed,” Elliot stated shortly before announcing his withdrawal from the
contest
Videos shared online shows some party members chanting
‘’Ole, thief’ at him as he left the venue of the primary.
He was first elected in 2015 under the All Progressives
Congress (APC) and went on to secure re-election in 2019 and 2023. He was
seeking a fourth term in the house.
