Tuesday, April 21, 2026 - The Israel Defense Forces has launched an investigation after a soldier was seen in a viral image smashing a statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon.
The photograph, which circulated widely on social media and
drew millions of views, sparked outrage, particularly over the destruction of a
Christian religious symbol. The Israeli army confirmed the authenticity of the
image on Sunday, stating that it showed one of its soldiers operating in the
region.
In a statement, the military said: “Following the completion
of an initial examination regarding a photograph published earlier today of an
IDF soldier harming a Christian symbol, it was determined that the photograph
depicts an IDF soldier operating in southern Lebanon.”
The army condemned the act, adding: “The IDF views the
incident with great severity and emphasises that the soldier’s conduct is
wholly inconsistent with the values expected of its troops.”
It further confirmed that the matter is under investigation,
stating: “The Northern Command is investigating the incident and is currently
being addressed through the chain of command. Appropriate measures will be
taken against those involved in accordance with the findings.”
The military also said it is working to repair the damage
caused, noting that efforts are underway to assist the local community in
restoring the statue. While reiterating that its operations are aimed at
dismantling Hezbollah infrastructure, the army stressed that it does not target
civilian or religious sites. “It has no plan to harm or attack civilian
infrastructure, religious buildings or religious symbols,” the statement said.
The incident comes amid ongoing tensions and recent military
activity in Lebanon, where thousands of casualties have been reported in the
past month. It also follows a temporary ceasefire agreement announced by Donald
Trump after discussions involving Joseph Aoun and Benjamin Netanyahu, aimed at
easing hostilities between the two countries.
