Saturday, April 11, 2026 - Three teen girls drowned while attempting to take selfies at a waterfall in Andhra Pradesh’s Alluri Sitharama Raju district, India.
The incident occurred on Thursday, April 9, in the
Ananthagiri hills.
Four girls from Jambuvalasa village in Hukumpeta mandal had
gone on an outing to the Mulagummi waterfall, a forested location near
Visakhapatnam.
Three of the girls got into the shallow part of the water
while the fourth girl filmed them. The girls are seen laughing and having a
good time before one of the girls suddenly ventures slightly farther out and
vanishes underwater. Her friends moved to the spot where she was in a bid to
help her, but they also went under.
According to police, the girls were standing on slippery
rocks close to the waterfalls when they lost their footing and slipped into the
water. Officials said none of them knew how to swim, worsening the situation as
they were pulled by the current.
The video appears to show their friend, who is filming,
rushing into the water while screaming for help after her friends were pulled
underwater. At this point, the camera goes out of focus.
Locals rushed to the spot after hearing cries for help and
managed to rescue one of the girls, who was later moved to a hospital.
However, the other three—identified as Trisha (17),
Ratnakumari (16), and Pavitra (16)— could not be saved.
Police teams later reached the site and retrieved the
bodies.
Authorities noted that while the waterfall may appear
relatively small, the terrain is extremely slippery and the currents can be
deceptively strong, making it hazardous for visitors.
