Sunday, January 18, 2026 - State Fire Service personnel on Saturday averted a major fire disaster at a filling station in Ilorin, the state capital, when a petrol tanker reportedly caught fire on arrival from Lagos to discharge fuel in the station.
The incident, which involved the tanker loaded with 45,000
litres of petrol occurred at about 14:31hrs, at Olumo filling station,
Oko-Olowo Junction, Ilorin, according to a statement by the spokesman of the
state fire service, Hassan Adekunle, in Ilorin on Saturday.
He disclosed that the tanker had just arrived at the filling
station after conveying fuel from Lagos when fire erupted from the tanker,
leading to a rapid escalation before the fire service was contacted.
“Upon arrival, firefighters worked tirelessly with high
professionalism to contain the inferno and successfully saved the filling
station and surrounding properties from what could have been a catastrophic
explosion and loss of lives.
“The petrol tanker was affected, while further escalation
into the filling station infrastructure was averted through the gallant efforts
of the firefighters,” he added.
The spokesman said further investigation is ongoing to
ascertain the root cause of the fire.
Director of the state fire service, Alabi Muhammed,
sympathized with the filling station owner over the incident and commended the
firefighters for their bravery and swift response.
He advised fuel transporters and filling station operators
to strictly adhere to safety protocols during fuel transportation and
discharge, ensure routine inspection of tankers, and maintain functional
firefighting equipment at all fuel dispensing stations.
The director also emphasized that early reporting and strict
compliance with safety standards are critical in preventing fuel-related
disasters.
