Friday, August 1, 2025 - A commercial truck reportedly suffered brake failure and crushed a pedestrian to death at the Offa Garage Roundabout in Ilorin, Kwara State.
It was gathered that the accident happened around 8:00 a.m.
on Friday along the Ilorin–Ajase Ipo highway.
The fatal crash involved a Mitsubishi Canter truck with
registration number SMK 801 XT, loaded with gallons of palm oil. Witnesses said
the truck veered off the road and rammed into the AP Filling Station located
near the roundabout, spilling its contents and causing significant damage.
The impact of the crash uprooted one of the fuel pumps and
severely damaged another. Two males sustained injuries, while five vehicles
were also wrecked in the chaos.
The truck, painted blue and green, reportedly lost control
due to brake failure while in motion. The driver, identified as Nasiru, managed
to escape unscathed.
Officials from the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC,
were present at the scene, but deferred official commentary to the Kwara State
Road Traffic Management Authority, KWARTMA.
Confirming the incident, KWARTMA’s Public Relations Officer,
Gani Olawoye, said the deceased had been evacuated and the damaged vehicles
were taken to the agency’s office. He noted that the injured victims were
rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Olawoye added that the agency’s Acting General Manager, Engr
Michael Bamidele, had called for increased vigilance and urged motorists,
especially truck operators, to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained to
prevent such accidents.
“As a preventive measure, all beggars around the Offa Garage
axis have also been directed to vacate the area,” Olawoye said.
