Friday, July 4, 2025 - A Zimbabwean woman and her two young children narrowly survived a brutal arson attack allegedly carried out by her ex-husband, who set their home on fire after she rejected his s3xual advances.
The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning as
29-year-old Dorcas Mutengwa and her children, aged three and seven, slept in
their home. Mutengwa was jolted awake by the smell of gasoline and the sight of
flames engulfing her bedroom
Despite suffering severe burns, Mutengwa managed to rescue
both children from the fire. Her seven-year-old son sustained burns to his
hands and nose, while the toddler was injured on her right ear.
Authorities have identified the alleged attacker as
Mutengwa’s estranged husband, Paul Zuze. Court documents show a history of
violence and threats. In November, Zuze was arrested for violating a protection
order after allegedly threatening Mutengwa with a kitchen knife when she
refused his s3xual demands.
Neighbours reported seeing a man fleeing the scene in a car
that matched Zuze’s vehicle. Fire investigators later confirmed that gasoline
had been poured on the roof of the house before it was ignited, leading to a
blaze that destroyed most of the family’s belongings, including furniture,
appliances, and clothing.
Local residents rushed to help extinguish the fire and
provided immediate aid to the injured family. The shocking attack has reignited
calls for stronger protections for domestic abuse survivors and more rigorous
enforcement of court-issued protection orders.
Community leaders condemned the incident and urged the
government to bolster support services for victims of domestic violence.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to locate and apprehend the
suspect.
