Friday, September 25, 2026 - Popular news anchor Reuben Abati has openly disagreed with the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, over his directive to decorate the First Niger Bridge with posters of President Bola Tinubu
Speaking during an online news broadcast on Thursday, Abati
described the order as discriminatory, especially as the country prepares for
the 2027 general elections.
His reaction followed Umahi’s instruction given on Wednesday
during an inspection of repair work on the bridge.
Abati argued that if political posters are allowed on the
bridge, all candidates from different political parties should have equal space
to display theirs, rather than giving one person a monopoly.
He stressed that the money used by the Ministry of Works to
repair the bridge belongs to all Nigerian taxpayers, meaning the public
infrastructure should not be reserved exclusively for the ruling party or a
single candidate.
