Friday, September 25, 2026 - The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has denied social media reports claiming that Nigeria’s National Identification Number (NIN) database was hacked
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Kayode Adegoke,
NIMC labeled the claims as completely false and baseless.
The commission explained that the video causing concern is
actually an old report from 2024 that had already been debunked.
NIMC reassured the public that the national identity
database has never been compromised, noting that it uses strong, multi-layered
security measures to protect people's personal information.
It warned Nigerians to ignore the video and stop spreading
unverified stories that cause unnecessary fear, urging everyone to get accurate
information only from official NIMC channels.
To further boost data security, NIMC highlighted its new
verification tool called NINAuth.
This service lets individuals verify their identity for
things like SIM registration, passport processing, tax filings, and banking
without sharing their raw NIN or sensitive details.
The commission added that this tool requires user approval
before any data is shared, ensuring compliance with Nigerian data privacy laws.
