Ex-convict arrested after he was caught trying to steal a car in Abuja

Tuesday, September 22, 2026 -The FCT police command has arrested an ex-convict for the alleged theft of vehicles.

According to Josephine Adeh, spokesperson of the command, the command on September 15 received a distress call reporting an attempted car theft along Tigris Crescent, Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, Abuja.

Adeh said responding to the distress call, a patrol team from Maitama Police Division was promptly dispatched to the scene, where one Mohammed Aliyu was arrested inside a vehicle while attempting to start and drive it away.

The police image-maker mentioned that preliminary investigations revealed that one Mr. Ikechukwu had parked his black Hyundai Santa vehicle while attending an appointment at a nearby office. Upon returning, he observed an unfamiliar individual inside the vehicle and raised an alarm, which attracted the attention of other persons in the vicinity.

Further investigations revealed that the suspect has previous records of arrest in two separate car theft incidents by Garki and Zuba Divisions. He had also served time and was recently released from Keffi Prison in April 2026. 

Adeh said the suspect remains in custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
