Friday, July 3, 2026 -President Bola Tinubu on Thursday, July 2, playfully referred to wife and First Lady of Nigeria, Remi Tinubu, as “Iya Alakara” (Mama Akara Seller), in an apparent light-hearted reference to the backlash she received from some Nigerians after advising low-income earners to venture into small-scale businesses like selling akara, roasting corn or kuli-kuli.
The President made the remark while observing protocol
during his address at the Presidential Press Corps Dinner held at the State
House, Abuja, last night.
A video shared online from the event showed President Tinubu
smiling as he acknowledged dignitaries in attendance before turning to his
wife.
“Good
evening, gentlemen of the press, ladies and gentlemen, my dear wife, the First
Lady, Iya Alakara,” the President said, drawing laughter and reactions from the
audience.
