Monday, June 1, 2026 - The Kogi State Government has suspended the annual Echane Festival in Ebiraland with immediate effect, citing security concerns and the need to maintain public order.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the state
Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo.
According to the government, the decision followed credible
intelligence reports suggesting that activities associated with the festival
could pose a threat to public peace and security and potentially lead to a
breakdown of law and order in parts of Kogi Central Senatorial District.
While acknowledging the cultural importance of the festival
and its role in preserving the heritage of the Ebira people, the government
said the safety of residents remains its top priority.
The statement said Governor Usman Ododo approved the
suspension in the interest of protecting lives and property. “The Governor has
directed that the Echane Festival be suspended with immediate effect in view of
security reports and the need to preserve law and order,” the statement read.
The government also directed all security agencies in the
state to enforce the directive and warned that anyone found organising,
participating in or promoting activities related to the suspended festival
would face legal consequences. According to the statement, Governor Ododo
remains committed to preserving peace and stability across the state and will
continue to take proactive measures to address security concerns.
The government further appealed to traditional rulers,
community leaders, youth groups and residents of the affected communities to
cooperate with security agencies and support efforts aimed at maintaining peace
and harmony. It added that security considerations would continue to guide
decisions relating to public gatherings and activities across the state.
