Navy hands over 5 suspected IPOB, ESN members to DSS for investigation




Tuesday, May 19, 2026 - The Nigerian Navy has transferred five individuals suspected of involvement with the banned Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Eastern Security Netwrk, ESN, and related criminal groups to the Department of State Services, DSS, Anambra State Command, for further investigation.

A statement signed Abiodun Folorunsho, Naval Director of Information, said that he suspects were detained by personnel from the Naval Outpost, NOP, Onitsha, stationed at Forward Operating Base, FOB, Amiyi, following intelligence reports that connected them to alleged criminal activities in the Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Preliminary investigations have identified one of the suspects as the purported coordinator of the group’s operations within the affected communities, while the others are reportedly associated with the network.

Initial findings also indicated locations that were allegedly utilized for meetings and recruitment activities.

In accordance with established inter-agency cooperation and existing regulations, the suspects were subsequently handed over to the Department of State Services for further investigation and appropriate action.

This operation highlights the Nigerian Navy’s ongoing commitment to supporting internal security operations and its continuous efforts to combat criminality, violent extremism, and threats to national security within joint operational areas.
