Corps member drowns during picnic at Bayelsa beach




Friday, May 8, 2026 - A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) identified as Ajetunmobi Sunday Dayo, has lost his life at a beach in Bayelsa State.

It was gathered that the deceased  had  gone to Okumbiribeleu Beach, Akassa community in Brass local government on Saturday, for a picnic when the unfortunate incident happened.

A community source told Daily Trust that Dayo was swimming with other colleagues, when he went missing.

According to the source, his colleagues began searching for him, after noticing his absence.

The source said it was when his colleagues raised the alarm that local divers around the beach launched a search and rescue mission, but to no avail.

His remains were discovered on Monday, after the water washed his body ashore at the beach.

He has been buried  by officials of  the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), in Bayelsa, after the approval of his parents.

It was gathered that the deceased was serving at the Community Secondary School (CSS), Kongho, in Akassa, before the unfortunate incident.

They had left the lodge at Tobukiri to Okumbiribeleu Beach, which is in another community for the tourist visit, before the incident happened.

The Public Relations Officer at the NYSC state office in Bayelsa, Mrs Yvonne Halliday- Urie, who confirmed the incident, described it as a sad one.

“The information is true and sad, he was buried yesterday in yenagoa. NYSC performed his burial rites according to the parents’ request yesterday,” she said.

The spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, DSP Musa Mohammed, also confirmed the incident.

He said investigation is ongoing to unravel the cause of the incident.
