Friday, April 10, 2026 - The Anambra State Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency has arrested two suspects for illegal revenue collection as part of its continued enforcement operations aimed at eliminating extortion and unauthorised levies across the state.
The suspects, Michael Uwaoma and Ndubuisi Aniukwu, were
apprehended for allegedly extorting traders and commercial operators at Mgbuka
Obosi and Umusiome Junction, Nkpor, in Idemili North Local Government Area.
This was disclosed in a press statement issued on Thursday
by the spokesperson for the Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency, Karen James.
James said the exercise was in line with SASA’s mandate,
adding that following their arrest, the suspects were arraigned before a
competent Magistrate Court, where they were remanded in a correctional facility
pending the determination of the case.
The statement partly read, “The Anambra State Special
Anti-Touting Squad Agency has arrested two suspects for illegal revenue
collection as part of its continued enforcement operations aimed at eliminating
illegal revenue collection and extortion across the state.
“The individuals, Michael Uwaoma and Ndubuisi Aniukwu, were
apprehended for allegedly extorting traders and commercial operators at Mgbuka
Obosi and Umusiome Junction, Nkpor, respectively. Preliminary investigations
further revealed that Aniukwu acted under the directive of one Onyekwelu, who
allegedly imposed a daily remittance target.
“Following their arrest, the suspects were arraigned before
a competent Magistrate’s Court, where they were remanded in a correctional
facility pending the determination of the case.
“The court granted bail under strict conditions, including a
₦100,000 bail bond, a ₦300,000 fine, and the
requirement of a verified Level 17 civil servant as surety. The case has been
adjourned to June 3, 2026, for further hearing.”
James reiterated SASA’s zero-tolerance stance against
illegal levies and related acts of extortion, adding that the agency remains
committed to restoring order, protecting legitimate businesses, and ensuring a
safe and lawful environment for residents and traders.
“Members of the public are encouraged to report any incidents of illegal collection or harassment to the appropriate authorities,” the statement added.
