Nigerian lawmakers are selfish – YUNUSA YA’U

Friday, March, 13 2026 - Convener of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, Yunusa Zakari Ya’u, has lambasted Federal lawmakers, accusing them of passing laws that favour themselves.

Ya’u made this allegation on Thursday during an interview on Arise Television.

He was speaking about the recently signed Electoral Act Amendment.

He said that politicians, especially Federal lawmakers, are not focused on delivering free and fair elections.

According to him, fundamental issues that Nigerians have been clamouring for are being set aside, while attention is given to politicians belonging to two parties at the same time.

“I think that what is becoming very clear is that politicians in the National Assembly are more concerned about doing a law that would favor them.

“Now, they have put aside very fundamental issues that Nigerians have been clamouring and are concerned about a politician belonging to two different parties at the same time.

“I mean, they are the people we have seen, because they don’t believe in any principles. They don’t believe in manifestos today, they are in one party today, tomorrow, they are in another party.
“When parties are truly democratic, they have functioning internal democracy. And so what we need is really an electoral system that will provide for transparency and accountability in the way in which elections are conducted in this country.

“I think that if you look at what they are doing, it’s clearly about this, also about self preservation, even the issue of removing forged certificates as a ground to contest, to petition election people. The politicians are simply doing things for self preservation.

“You want to criminalize belonging to two different parties, but you don’t want to criminalize a very fraudulent way of filing papers with fake certificates, fake degrees and so forth.

“I think that it’s time for them to understand that Nigerians are no longer passive about the type of laws that we deserve in this country,” he said
