Angry mob burns transformer vandal to death in Cross River

Wednesday, March, 11 2026 -An unidentified young man suspected of vandalising an electricity transformer in Calabar has reportedly been burnt alive by a mob.

This is the second such incident in the same area within a month. On February 10, 2026, a man whose identity was unknown was set ablaze over a similar accusation in the neighbourhood.

The latest incident occurred on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at Palm Street near Target Junction. Eyewitnesses said members of a local vigilante group joined the mob that apprehended the suspect and burnt him before police arrived.

Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, said, “Upon receiving the information, a police patrol team swiftly mobilised to the scene, where the burnt corpse was found in front of the transformer.

“Items recovered at the scene include an old-model electricity meter box, a piece of copper wire, and electric cables, suspected to be vandalised materials.”

Sunday added that local government authorities and the Environmental Health Services were contacted to evacuate the body.

He cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands. “Mob action or jungle justice is illegal and unacceptable. Members of the public are strongly advised to hand over suspects to the police for proper investigation and prosecution,” he said.
