Wednesday, February 11, 2026 - A member of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, Seriake Dickson, has said that real-time transmission of election results does not guarantee transparent election.
Dickson said this on Tuesday when he appeared as a guest in
an interview on ‘Prime Time’, a programme on Arise Television.
He was speaking on the Electoral Act amendment saga.
According to him, Nigeria is not at the point where it can
vote electronically at polling units.
The Senate on Tuesday amended the Electoral Act, allowing for the
electronic transmission of results, but made provision for technical issues
that may arise in the course of elections.
Reacting, the former Bayelsa State Governor said: “The word
‘real-time’ is not what will give us a transparent election. It gets you the
same thing, even though the language it gets you this.
“And this is how it works. It’s not theoretical. You see,
since 2023 INEC itself, even without legislative backing, what we try to do now
is to provide some kind of legislative framework to surround, to safeguard and
protect the concept of iREV.
“But in practice since 2023, INEC by its regulations compels
presiding officers and electoral officials to after the poll has been closed
and results entered, take a picture of that result and send it to the iREV.”
