2 arrested for indiscriminate dumping of refuse in Lagos

Sunday, February 22 2026 - Management Authority, LAWMA, has arrested two persons caught dumping refuse at the Ikosi Y-Junction median, right by the LAMATA BRT Bus Yard in Ikosi–Ketu.

The offenders were quickly taken to the Special Environmental Offences Mobile Court in Oshodi to face prosecution under Lagos’ environmental laws.

The suspects, James Aderele, 25, from Osun State, and Ajoke Ayinde, 37, from Oyo State, were charged with indiscriminate refuse disposal. Their actions, LAWMA noted, pose serious health risks and show blatant disregard for public hygiene.

“Cleanliness isn’t just government work; it’s everyone’s responsibility,” LAWMA said. “Residents must stay alert. If you see littering or illegal dumping, speak up. Protecting our environment is everybody’s job.”

LAWMA’s Waste Surveillance, Investigation, and Enforcement team carried out the arrests as part of ongoing efforts to stop people from polluting the city.

According to the agency, this move is aimed at discouraging others from dumping waste carelessly, especially in busy spots like Ikosi–Ketu.

Commuters and residents in the area had complained about heaps of trash accumulating near the median and BRT bus yard.

With LAWMA stepping in, there’s hope that public spaces will remain cleaner and health hazards are reduced.

The authority restated that cooperation from residents is crucial. Reporting offenders, using proper disposal channels, and following environmental regulations are key steps in keeping Lagos safe, healthy, and livable for all.

“Environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and proactive—see something, say something. Protecting our environment is everybody’s job,” LAWMA stated.
