Monday, January 19, 2026 - Students of the Ondo State College of Health Technology, Akure, in the early hours of Monday shut down academic and non-academic activities at the institution.
While protesting against the alleged lack of adequate
infrastructure as well as extortion from some staff of the institution, they
demanded immediate action by the management.
The protesting students armed with various inscriptions,
such as ‘Health Tech With Poor Environment’, ‘Stop Extortion Now’, ‘We Are
Tired of This Wickedness’ and ‘No Solution, No Exams,’ barricaded the school
gate from allowing officials of the institution to gain entrance.
The students, who set bonfires and chanted solidarity songs,
vowed that there will not be lectures or examinations until the management
addresses the deteriorating conditions of classrooms, hostels, and
laboratories, as well as the lack of a reliable water supply on campus.
Some of the students also accused the management of the
institution of imposing unnecessary charges amid poor facilities, adding that
their continued appeal over the development had been ignored.
Speaking on the situation, the Rector of the college,
Oluwole Oluwanbe, refuted the allegations but assured that the government will
intervene.
