Islamic cleric charged with illegal sale of government land in Kano

Wednesday, January 21, 2026 - The Kano State Police Command on Tuesday arraigned Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ibrahim Isa Makwarari, before Magistrate Court No. 53 in the Normansland area of Kano metropolis.

Sheikh Makwarari is accused of involvement in the illegal sale of government and community-owned lands, an offence described by the police as a serious violation of land administration laws.

Presiding Magistrate Mustapha Sa’ad Datti oversaw the proceedings, during which the defence counsel informed the court that they were not fully prepared to proceed, noting that a similar case involving the cleric is currently pending before a higher court in the state.

In response, prosecution counsel Barrister Nura stated that the matter was first reported on November 18, 2025, and that the police had previously submitted the case file to the Kano State Ministry of Justice for legal review to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to prosecute or discontinue the case.

After hearing submissions from both sides, Magistrate Datti adjourned the matter to today, Wednesday, January 21, 2026, when the charges are expected to be formally read and the defendant’s bail application considered.
