Indiana Judge and his wife are shot at their suburban home

Wednesday, January 21, 2026- A frightening attack unfolded Sunday afternoon in Lafayette, Indiana, when Tippecanoe Superior Court Judge Steven Meyer and his wife, Kimberly Meyer, were shot at their suburban home by an unknown assailant, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 2:17 p.m. when someone approached the couple’s front door and, after claiming to have found their dog, opened fire through the door and a nearby window. Police recovered shell casings at the scene, and both victims were rushed to a hospital; Judge Meyer was struck in the arm and his wife suffered a hip injury. Both are currently listed in stable condition as the investigation continues.

Law enforcement has launched a multi‑agency search for the shooter, with local police coordinating with the Indiana State Police, the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI to locate the person or people responsible. No suspects have been publicly identified, and authorities have not yet determined a motive.

Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski condemned the attack as “senseless unacceptable violence” and said all available resources are being used in the search. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward as the community reels from the shocking daytime assault.

The shooting has also raised concerns about the safety of the judiciary and public officials. Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta H. Rush called the violence against the judge and his family “completely unacceptable” and urged fellow judges to remain vigilant about their security. Kimberly Meyer released a statement expressing gratitude to investigators, first responders, and medical personnel for their support and care. With the shooter still at large, the case remains an active and high‑priority investigation for law enforcement agencies.
