Saturday, January 10, 2026 - A commercial driver and his assistant, who were transporting
live chicks, lost their lives after their vehicle crashed into the median at
the Oremeji area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Friday.
According to a statement from the spokesperson for the Ogun
State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, the
accident occurred in the early hours of the day.
According to Akinbiyi, the deceased were travelling in a
Mazda commercial bus with registration number YNF 414 XN when they lost control
due to excessive speeding and rammed into the median on the expressway.
He noted that the impact of the collision led to the death
of the two occupants of the vehicle, who are yet to be identified.
He said, “A fatal accident occurred at the Oremeji Bus Stop,
inbound Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, at about 1:30 a.m.
“According to an eyewitness, the accident was caused by
excessive speed and loss of control, and as a result, the bus hit the barrier
and somersaulted.
“Two people (the driver and his conductor) died in the
accident.”
He noted that the deceased victims were taken to a nearby
morgue in the area, while the accident vehicle was towed to the nearest police
division.
He added that the Ibafo Motor Traffic Division Police towed
the accident bus, which was loaded with live chickens, for further
investigation.
While commiserating with the families of the deceased, the TRACE spokesperson warned drivers against excessive speeding, stressing that such behaviour could lead to avoidable loss of lives.
