Tuesday, January 27, 2026 - The Lagos State Task Force has apprehended 115 street
beggars in different parts of the state as part of an intensified enforcement
drive to rid public spaces of criminal elements and street urchins, commonly
referred to as Omotaku.
The development was confirmed on Monday by the Commissioner
for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a post on his official X
handle.
According to Wahab, 26 suspected members of the Omotaku
group arrested across several locations within the last 24 hours were
subsequently charged before a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Oshodi.
The defendants reportedly admitted to the offences and were
handed three-month jail terms in line with applicable laws.
The commissioner said the operation reinforces the state
government’s zero-tolerance approach to activities that compromise public
safety, disrupt order, and misuse public infrastructure.
He added that the enforcement exercise would be sustained statewide to ensure adherence to environmental and public order regulations, while maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly Lagos.
