Monday, December 22, 2025 - Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, has written off claims by the opposition, alleging secret alterations in the new tax laws.
According to Ajayi, there was no proof that the laws were
altered.
He described the allegations as political noise meant to distract
the government.
He said, “Opposition elements can say whatever they want,
even when it is very obvious to every rational person that all they seek to do
every time is to pollute the waters and create a toxic environment around
policy issues.”
He said opposition pressure will not stop the full
implementation of the new tax regime from January 1, 2026.
The tax reforms, signed into law by President Bola Tinubu,
consist of four major bills that the government describes as a major shift in
Nigeria’s tax system.
According to the proponents, it is meant to make tax payment
easier, widen the tax base, remove multiple taxation, and improve revenue
collection across federal, state, and local governments.
The bills initially faced stiff opposition, especially from
some lawmakers in northern Nigeria before they reluctantly bought into the
idea.
Ajayi noted that a House committee led by Finance Committee
Chairman James Faleke has been set up to review the claims.
He assured that the government will respect its findings.
He also said agencies are already prepared for implementation,
noting that the committee overseeing the roll-out has been working for six
months and will not be distracted.
