Former Manchester City captain FERNANDINHO retires from professional football at 40

Friday, November 21, 2025 - Manchester City’s iconic former captain Fernandinho has officially retired from football at the age of 40, bringing an end to a storied career.

The announcement brings to a close one of the most decorated and respected careers in the modern era, with Fernandinho long established as one of Manchester City’s greatest-ever midfielders.

Fernandinho spent nine years at City, winning five Premier League titles, six League Cups, and an FA Cup, making 383 appearances for the club. Before that, he claimed six Ukrainian titles and a UEFA Cup with Shakhtar Donetsk.

He finished his career after a spell with Athletico Paranaense, where in 2003 he began his career.

The 40-year-old Brazilian had not played since December 2024 in Athletico Paranaense against Atletico Mineiro, but said after his brief appearance this week, “I’m already tired. I ran for 30-something minutes today, and I’m exhausted.”

The Manchester City legend continued, “There’s nothing in football that motivates me anymore. I’ve achieved everything I could. Now it’s time to enjoy my family.”

Concluding, Fernandinho said, “We didn’t reach an agreement for a new contract, and that’s the most natural thing in the world. I’ve never hidden my gratitude, my respect, and affection for Athletico, especially their fans.”

The 53-cap Brazil international is now tipped for a future in coaching or a club ambassador role, possibly at City. His leadership and consistency on the pitch earned plaudits globally, while his humility marks his farewell.
