Friday, August 1, 2025 - President Bola Tinubu has
extended the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service,
Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, by one extra year. Adewale was due to retire by
August 31, 2025.
The Presidential Spokesman, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the
latest development on Thursday, in a statement, hinging the decision on the
need to allow Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete critical
initiatives of this administration.
Among the reasons adduced by the presidency for the tenure
extension include the need for modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service;
implementation of the National Single Window Project; and the execution of
Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)
protocol.
Onanuga stated in full, “The presidency announces that the
tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bashir
Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, which is due to expire on August 31, 2025, has been
extended by one year.
“The extension, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,
GCFR, will enable Mr. Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete
critical initiatives of this administration, including: the modernisation of
the Nigeria Customs Service; the implementation of the National Single Window
Project; and the execution of Nigeria’s obligations under the African
Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.
“President Tinubu recognises Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast
leadership and commitment to service.
“The president is confident that this extension will further
strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate of
trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security”.
Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the
appointment of Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the
National Council on Climate Change (NCCC).
The appointment, announced in a statement issued on Thursday
by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo
Onanuga, takes immediate effect.
Mrs. Majekodunmi, a seasoned climate finance expert and
environmental lawyer, succeeds Dr. Nkiruka Madueke, who was appointed as the
Council’s pioneer head in June 2024.
With over 17 years of experience, Majekodunmi has worked
with both global and national institutions on renewable energy, carbon markets,
and climate governance.
Until her appointment, she served as the NCCC’s Financial
Adviser, where she played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s climate policies
and international climate engagements.
The statement noted that President Tinubu expressed gratitude to the outgoing Director-General, Dr. Madueke, for her “dedicated service and strong foundation for the Council’s continued growth.”
