Saturday, July 5, 2025 - Former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, has alleged that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration will be defeated in the 2027 general election, even if his son, Seyi Tinubu, is appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Dalung made the remarks during an interview on New Central
on Friday, July 4, where he criticised the current administration, accusing it
of worsening the living conditions of Nigerians.
“Nigerians should buckle up for 2027 because the battle line
has been drawn. The government of President Bola Tinubu has declared war
against the Nigerian people. The government has weaponized poverty, hunger and
hardship, and has popularised corruption, impunity and injustice,” Dalung said.
He argued that the only way to salvage the country is for
political leaders in opposition parties to rally under the new coalition being
formed on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to take on the
ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.
“The only option we have now is to align with the coalition
movement, to reposition ourselves and confront the government in 2027,” he
added.
Dalung expressed confidence that the electorate would reject
the current leadership in 2027, regardless of any perceived manipulation or
control of key institutions by the presidency.
“Like I promised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, even if the 36
state governors defect to the APC and he appoints his son, Seyi Tinubu as the
chairman of INEC, and maybe he will appoint his wife, the chief justice of
Nigeria and INEC will be the last institution to decamp, he will be defeated in
2027,” Dalung said.
Opposition politicians have recently announced the formation
of a political coalition under the ADC to challenge the APC in 2027. The
movement includes several political heavyweights, such as former governors,
lawmakers, and ministers, who are aiming to build a formidable front against
the ruling party.
