KWANKWASO not joining APC — NNPP Vice Chairman

Sunday, July 27, 2025 - The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has denied widespread rumours that its leader and 2023 presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Prince Nweze Onu, the NNPP National Vice Chairman (South-East), dismissed the claims that Kwankwaso is defecting to APC as mere social media speculation driven by misinformation.

“Talks about Kwankwaso moving to the APC only exist on social media. I am sure you know that the use of Artificial Intelligence and other instruments of social media is very dangerous and makes people spin a lot of narration, especially when it comes to politics,” Onu told a correspondent.

Onu also refuted suggestions that Kwankwaso’s meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa last Monday, July 21, 2025, was politically motivated. “No, he didn’t go for any visitation. He only went there for a programme. The only reason both of them were seen together was because the programme was held at the Presidential Villa,” Onu insisted.

However, media reports from the time of the meeting quoted Kwankwaso telling State House Correspondents that his discussion with President Tinubu indeed “centred on politics and governance,” and that he “might work with Tinubu,” though he did not elaborate on the details. This contrasting account has fueled continued speculation about potential alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.

Despite the speculation, Onu defended Kwankwaso’s recent criticisms of the Tinubu administration, stating they were justified given the current state of the nation. “He is right. It is a clear manifestation, and that has been the reason we in the opposition have to talk. Somebody must make the president realise what he’s doing,” Onu said.

Furthermore, the NNPP chieftain affirmed that Kwankwaso intends to contest the 2027 presidential election. “Why not? That is what we are saying. For as long as he is a Nigerian and he meets the statutory requirement to aspire to vote and be voted for, he is good to go,” Onu declared.

Onu also accused the APC of political desperation, suggesting that the ruling party’s intense focus on the 2027 elections is becoming “unhealthy.” “They are just too desperate. Their attempt to do too much is what is pushing them into depression,” he added.
