Former priestess turned evangelist sentenced to 15 years in prison for fraudulent religious schemes

Friday, July 4, 2025 - The Accra Circuit Court has sentenced former traditional priestess turned evangelist, Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa or Evangelist Tupac, to 15 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for her role in a series of fraudulent religious schemes.

The sentence, delivered on June 3, follows her conviction on multiple counts of charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretence.

Nana Agradaa’s conviction stems from a televised broadcast in 2022 on her self-owned channel, Today-TV, during which she claimed to possess spiritual powers capable of doubling money. She urged viewers to attend an all-night service at her church, Heaven Way Champion International Ministry, located in Weija, Accra, promising that any money offered would be miraculously multiplied.

According to court documents, six complainants, among over a thousand others, responded to the call and travelled from various parts of the country to attend the event. Many offered substantial sums of money based on her assurances, but none received the promised returns.

“The accused successfully demanded and received huge sums of money from some members of the public who attended the said all-night service at Heaven Way Champion International Ministry, Weija, including complainants in this matter, as indicated on the face of the charge sheet,” the prosecution stated.

Investigations further revealed that Nana Agradaa acted in concert with others in executing the fraudulent scheme.

The case has drawn significant public attention, with many expressing mixed reactions to the sentence. While some see it as justice served, others have raised broader concerns about unregulated religious practices and the exploitation of faith in Ghana.

Authorities have reiterated the importance of vigilance and encouraged the public to report similar fraudulent activities.
