Saturday, July 26, 2025 - The Kano Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of two men, Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Mukhtar Usman, who were caught impersonating operatives of the anti-graft agency.
The duo were sentenced on Friday, July 25, 2025, by Justice
Nasiru Saminu of the Kano State High Court after pleading guilty to the
offence.
They were arraigned on a one-count charge bordering on
criminal impersonation after they falsely presented themselves as EFCC
investigators.
The charge revealed that both men used a fake EFCC identity
card in a calculated attempt to appear genuine.
According to the charge: “That you, Buhari Abdullahi and
Umar Mukhtar Usman, sometime in May 2025 at Kano within the jurisdiction of
this honourable court, falsely impersonated to be investigators of Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) where you used false identity card and
paraded yourselves as staff of EFCC, and you thereby committed an offence
contrary to and punishable under Section 132 of the Penal Code Law.”
Following their guilty plea, EFCC counsel Idris I. Haruna
tendered the facts of the case and urged the court to hand down a conviction.
Justice Saminu agreed with the prosecution and convicted
both men.
He sentenced them to six months imprisonment each, with an
option of a N50,000 fine.
The conviction came after the two impostors were apprehended
by EFCC operatives while trying to carry out fraudulent activities using their
fake identities.
