Body of slain Kogi journalist found dumped in a bush



Tuesday, July 29, 2025 - The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of the body of photojournalist Ayobami Aiyepeku, who was allegedly k!lled by his neighbour, Oluwapelumi Adebayo. 

Command spokesperson, SP Williams Aya, told journalists on Monday, July 28, in Lokoja that Aiyepeku’s decomposing body was discovered Sunday evening, July 27, near the WAEC office in the Crusher Zone 8 axis of Lokoja, the state capital. 

“The corpse has been deposited at the Kogi State Specialist Hospital,” Aya said. 

He added that a discreet investigation is underway to uncover the full circumstances of the k!lling. 

The late journalist was reportedly k!lled on the night of July 22 in an office close to the Government House/GRA area of Lokoja. 

Aya appealed to the public, the deceased’s colleagues, and family to provide credible information that could aid the investigation. 

Ayobami’s elder brother, Timothy Aiyepeku, urged the federal and Kogi governments to ensure justice is served. 

“We commend the police for their efforts so far and the media for ensuring this case remains in the public eye,” he said. 

Residents reportedly raised an alarm after a foul odour led them to a nearby bush, where the body was discovered. 

The Chairman of Lokoja Local Government, Abdullahi Adamu, visited the scene with security agents and confirmed the identity of the deceased. 

It was reported earlier thatAiyepeku was suspected to have been k!lled by Jacob Adebayo Pelumi, a staff member of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS), and his neighbour. 

Pelumi was reported to have lured Aiyepeku to his poultry farm, where he “struck him on the head with an iron object and dismembered the body”. 

Then on Thursday, July 24, the body of the suspected k!ller was found in a room at Abidan 115 Hotel in Lokoja. Witnesses claimed he di£d by su!cide. 

The state government ordered the hotel to be sealed on Friday to “preserve evidence and facilitate a thorough inquiry by the relevant authorities”
