Benue women stage protest over rampant insecurity

Friday, July 4, 2025 - Women from the North Bank neighbourhood, a suburb of Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, demonstrated vehemently in the streets against the rampant insecurity and the alleged indiscriminate arrests of local residents by security personnel, on Friday, July 4.

The irate women temporarily disrupted traffic flow by blocking the busy federal highway close to the Agan toll gate while brandishing leaves and singing solidarity songs.

Speaking to reporters during the demonstration, a few of the women voiced their grave concerns about what they called an alarming increase in arbitrary detentions by security forces working in Makurdi's North Bank neighborhood..The demonstrators claim that security personnel have increased the number of "able-bodied civilians" they arrest while not doing enough to address the dangers posed by armed herders who they say are still attacking communities throughout Benue State.

“In just one day, 50 innocent persons were arrested in North Bank, and it’s happening every day. We live in fear not only of Fulani herdsmen who attack us but now also of security agencies who come and pick up our husbands and sons for no reason.”
