Man brutally beats neighbor’s wife in Minna

Tuesday, June 24, 2025 - A man is in police custody for allegedly beating his neighbour’s wife, Mrs Deborah Andrew, to a stupor.

The suspect, identified only as Surajo, reportedly attacked the victim while she was breastfeeding her one-month-old baby on her bed, after her husband, Mr Andrew, had gone out to work.

The husband, Mr Andrew, told Daily Trust that they lived in the same house as tenants with the suspect in the Tungan Goro area of Minna, Niger State, and that he could not establish what led to the incident between the suspect and his wife.

“I was at my place of work when my wife called me saying that somebody wanted to k!ll her. I didn’t believe it until I returned home and found it was our fellow tenant, Surajo. My wife’s both eyes were covered with blood. He beat her up mercilessly and her eyes were swollen up.

“We have not had any issue with him. But it is alleged that he’s a drug addict. But if truly he was under the influence of drugs, he should have gone to stay on the road and weighed his strength with a moving trailer or look for his fellow man to weigh his strength instead of exercising his power on my wife.

“I want justice for my wife because his intention was to k!ll her,’’ he said.

The suspect was also said to have smashed the one-month-old baby on the floor during the assault.

Both the mother and the baby were later admitted at the Minna General Hospital for treatment.

The victim, Madam Deborah Andrew, said it was only by the grace of God that she survived the attack, as most other tenants had gone out, except one woman named Amarya, who was unable to restrain the suspect.

“I was in bed breastfeeding my baby when Surajo burst into my room. He sat on my stomach, overpowered me and strangled me. He slammed my baby on the floor.

“I had just delivered the baby through Caesarean section. I am in pain,” she said.

The spokesman for the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident to the publication. He said the suspect had been arrested.

He said, “On 18/6/2025 at about 10am, a report of assault and causing grievous hurt was made at Chanchaga Div, that on the same date at about 9:20am, one Surajo intentionally assaulted and caused serious physical injuries on one Mrs Deborah Andrew and her infant baby.

“Police operatives of the division arrested the said suspect, while the victims were taken to the general hospital for treatment and discharged. The suspect is in custody, investigation is in progress.”
