Monday, May 26, 2025 - An early morning accident in the Alausa area of Ikeja, Lagos, over the weekend left four passengers seriously injured after a commercial bus crashed into a streetlight pole, allegedly due to drunk driving.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA,
confirmed that the incident involved a fully loaded commercial bus
(registration number: KTU 69 YJ), which veered off course and collided
forcefully with the roadside infrastructure.
Preliminary findings indicate that the driver, believed to
be under the heavy influence of alcohol, lost control of the vehicle, causing a
high-impact crash that sent shockwaves through the vicinity. A couple seated
mid-row were among the most critically injured, alongside another male and
female passenger.
LASTMA operatives stationed nearby responded swiftly,
executing a coordinated rescue that involved stabilizing the victims at the
scene before handing them over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS.
The injured were subsequently transported to the Trauma and Emergency Centre at
the Toll Gate for further treatment.
Officials say no fatalities were recorded, and other
passengers escaped with minor or no injuries.
The Lagos State Police Command, through its Alausa Division,
secured the accident site throughout the rescue operation, ensuring smooth
emergency response and preserving evidence for further investigation.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, strongly
condemned the reckless behaviour of driving under the influence. He reiterated
the agency’s commitment to curbing such infractions through ongoing advocacy
and intensified monitoring across Lagos motor parks.
“Don’t Drink and Drive,” he emphasized, noting that LASTMA’s
Monitoring and Surveillance Unit remains actively engaged in sensitizing
commercial drivers on road safety regulations.
Mr Bakare-Oki extended his sympathies to the injured
passengers and wished them a swift recovery, while urging commuters and drivers
alike to prioritize safety at all times.
