Thursday, May 8, 2025 - The Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta, has confirmed the death of an army captain and a private soldier during a deadly attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on Izge community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.
The assault, which occurred at about 1:00 am on Wednesday,
was met with fierce resistance from the military, the Civilian Joint Task Force
(CJTF), local hunters, vigilantes, and members of the community.
In the ensuing confrontation, three suspected terrorists
were killed, and several items were recovered from the assailants, including
over ten bicycles and motorcycles, an operational vehicle, and a sophisticated
rifle with ammunition.
Speaking to journalists, the emir described the attack as
tragic but praised the swift and coordinated response of security forces and
community members, which helped repel the insurgents.
“My people in the Izge community came under Boko Haram
invasion today at about 1 am. Unfortunately, a captain and a soldier paid the
supreme price,” the emir said.
“But in a brave and swift reaction… the attack was repelled
with the killing of three terrorists.”
The traditional ruler commended the continued efforts of
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, for his unwavering
support to security personnel and volunteers combating insurgency across the
state.
“As I speak, many people are still in the bush combing the
whereabouts of the fleeing terrorists,” he said.
“I want to equally call on the federal government to equip
our security forces with technological warfare/weapons to defeat the remnants
of Boko Haram members terrorising our communities almost on a daily basis.”
The emir also urged the federal government to take urgent
action to stem the tide of renewed attacks as residents of Izge and surrounding
communities prepare for the annual farming season.
He offered prayers for the fallen soldiers and consoled their grieving families.
