Monday, May 5, 2025 - Kebbi State Police Command has detained three officers over the alleged murder of a suspect arrested in connection with a theft case.
Spokesperson of the Command, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar, disclosed
this in a statement issued on Saturday in Birnin Kebbi.
According to Abubakar, the incident followed a report of
stolen trailer truck rims lodged at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Jega.
A suspect, identified as Abubakar Auwal, was arrested on
April 15 in connection with the case.
“On April 16, at about 6 a.m., while the investigation was
ongoing, the suspect collapsed in detention,” the statement read.
“He was rushed to the General Hospital, Jega, for treatment
but died the same day at about 10 p.m,” he added.
Following the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP
Bello Sani, ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal
Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation.
The command said three officers found culpable in the matter
are currently in detention at the SCID for further investigation. Meanwhile,
the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Jega has been queried and redeployed
with immediate effect.
Abubakar reaffirmed the command’s commitment to upholding
professionalism and ethical standards in policing.
“The wrong actions of a few officers do not reflect the
values of the Nigeria Police Force. Prompt disciplinary measures are always
taken against erring officers to ensure accountability and justice,” he said.
He added that the Nigeria Police remained dedicated to
maintaining discipline, safeguarding its integrity, and fostering public trust.
