Wednesday, February 19, 2025 - Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has revealed that he personally asked Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez to sign Kylian Mbappé back in 2022.
He said he wanted to see the Frenchman at the Santiago Bernabéu after
playing against him in the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League Round-of-16 clash
between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.
Casemiro was one of the most important players at Real Madrid at the
time, and the now-Manchester United star claimed that it was impossible to stop
Mbappé when they played against each other.
With Casemiro in midfield, Real Madrid secured a 3-2 aggregate win over
PSG, but Mbappé was a constant threat to the Spaniards.
The France national team captain scored his side’s only goal in the
first leg in Paris, which ended 1-0. The Frenchman then scored again at the
Santiago Bernabéu to give PSG a 2-0 aggregate lead.
However, Madrid mounted a comeback, securing a quarter-final spot after
a second-half hat-trick from former striker Karim Benzema completed a stunning
turnaround for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
The LaLiga giants went on to win the Champions League that season,
beating Premier League side Liverpool 1-0 in the final.
Mbappé now plays for Real Madrid, having joined on a free transfer two
seasons later.
Casemiro, meanwhile, departed the Santiago Bernabéu and joined
Manchester United in the summer of 2022.
Speaking in an interview with Spanish media outlet Diario AS, the
Brazilian said: “Did I ask for Mbappé to be signed after the match at the Parc
des Princes? Yes. I spoke to the president and told him: ‘Sign him, it’s
impossible to stop him.’”
