Thursday, January 16, 2025 - The Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Aminu Daurawa, has raised concerns over inadequate parental involvement following the rescue of 250 children from the streets of Kano.
In a recent video, Daurawa detailed a distressing operation in which
Hisbah officers discovered at least 230 children wandering across major streets
in Kano metropolis. Most of the children were under the age of 15.
“These children grew up in public spaces such as railway stations, under
flyovers, markets, and motor parks,” Daurawa stated. He emphasized that while
230 children were rescued in this operation, the issue is far more extensive,
with reports indicating that as many as 5,000 children may be living in similar
conditions on the streets.
“Our rescue efforts were limited to 230 children due to the capacity of
our available facilities. The governor has provided necessary arrangements for
their care,” he added.
The Hisbah officers conducted the operation in locations such as railway
lines, under bridges, and motor parks, often during the early hours when the
children should have been home with their families.
Tragically, four children were confirmed dead due to exposure to harsh
weather conditions and illness. Daurawa also revealed that some of the children
were found in places like football viewing centers, where they paid to watch
games and sleep, while others lived in spaces such as railway stations.
