Tuesday, August 13, 2024 - The Kaduna State Government has lifted the dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on the metropolitan cities of Kaduna and Zaria following the outbreak of violence during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.
The curfew was officially relaxed on
Tuesday morning after a thorough assessment of the security situation in the
two cities and their surrounding areas by the Kaduna State Security Council,
led by Governor Uba Sani.
In a statement, the Kaduna State
Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, announced
the complete removal of the 6 pm to 8 am curfew. The decision allows
law-abiding citizens to move freely and engage in legitimate activities in
Kaduna and Zaria towns and their environs without any restrictions.
The statement emphasized that while
the curfew has been lifted, the Security Council advised that any processions
or gatherings must be verified with the relevant agencies to prevent any
potential breakdown of law and order and to ensure the overall security of the
public.
“The removal of the curfew is
effective immediately, from today Tuesday, 13th August 2024," the
statement read. "The Kaduna State Security Council during the extensive
assessment held last night unanimously recommended the removal of the curfew
and reiterated its commitment to the security and safety of the citizenry in
Kaduna State."
The Security Council also warned that
security forces would remain vigilant and ready to respond to any threats to
public peace, with a commitment to prosecuting individuals or groups who pose
such threats.
Governor Sani, while presiding over
the briefing, praised the leadership of the security agencies, as well as
religious and traditional leaders, and other critical stakeholders for their
efforts in containing the unrest that followed the protests in Kaduna and
Zaria.
The Governor reaffirmed his
commitment to an inclusive and participatory approach in governance, pledging
to continue engaging with stakeholders to ensure the peace, unity, and
development of Kaduna State.
