Saturday, October 3, 2026 - The Ondo State Competition and Consumer Protection Agency has warned NGOs allegedly posing as officials of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission not to extort traders or seal business premises in the state.
The agency's Executive Chairman, Oluyemi Fasipe, gave the
warning in a statement on his official handle on Friday.
It followed reports that some NGOs were presenting
themselves as FCCPC officials and demanding money from traders and business
owners.
According to Fasipe, the groups were collecting payments
under the names FCCPC registration and consumer protection levy.
He called the activities unauthorised and said anyone caught
impersonating officials of the FCCPC or the Ondo agency, or unlawfully
collecting money in their name, will be handed over to law enforcement for
investigation and prosecution.
He said no NGO is allowed to act as the FCCPC and that only
authorised officials with valid identification can carry out official duties
for the commission.
Fasipe explained that the FCCPC is a federal agency set up
under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, while the Ondo
agency handles competition and consumer protection matters in the state under
the Ondo State Competition and Consumer Protection Law, 2026.
He told the groups involved to stop immediately and said the
state government will not tolerate impersonation, extortion or harassment that
misleads the public and disrupts genuine businesses.
He urged supermarket owners, market leaders, Iyalojas,
Babalojas, traders and the public to report anyone claiming to be an FCCPC
official or asking for payment on its behalf.
Reports can be made to the agency office or the nearest
police station, or through his direct line, 0706 287 7740.
The chairman added that any genuine joint operation between
the Ondo agency and the FCCPC will be properly coordinated with the relevant
authorities and announced through official channels.
He assured traders, businesses and consumers that the agency
is committed to protecting their rights and promoting a fair, safe and open
marketplace.
He asked residents to stay alert and avoid paying
individuals or groups whose authority to act for the FCCPC or the Ondo agency
cannot be confirmed.
