Friday, October 30, 2026 - Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Most Rev. Godfrey Onah, has raised the alarm over what he described as Nigeria's drift into a one-party state, warning that the country now has only one functioning arm of government.
Bishop Onah spoke on Thursday at a public function in Enugu,
where he lamented the wave of defections and the collapse of opposition parties
into the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
"Gradually, all the parties, all the other parties, are
collapsing into one party. We don't have political parties based on ideologies.
We have platforms for getting into power, remaining in power and having access
to public funds," he said.
According to him, the worst problem is not even the
one-party dominance but the collapse of checks and balances.
"The worst problem is that there are no longer three
arms of government. There is now only one arm of government – the executive.
The executive has sucked up both the judiciary and the legislature,"
Bishop Onah declared.
He challenged federal lawmakers to prove him wrong by
stopping what he called the excessive borrowing of over N40 trillion already
budgeted to finance the deficit.
He also likened Nigerian politicians to "fluid and gas
moving between tanks without return valve," saying they move from PDP to
APC to ADC without ideology, while Nigerians queue in the sun to vote for them,
warning that if the trend continues, democracy in Nigeria risks becoming merely
ceremonial.
