Wednesday, October 7, 2026 -The Enugu State Police Command has arrested five persons in three separate operations for allegedly vandalising and stealing public infrastructure in the state.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel
Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, identifying the vandalised
infrastructure as a solar street light, road traffic signs and materials
belonging to the Enugu State Water Corporation.
Ndukwe said on September 27, 2026, at about 8:30pm,
operatives of the New Haven Police Division, acting on a tip-off, arrested two
men, Wisdom Nuhu and Moses Jonathan, at a scrap dump in New Artisan Market,
Enugu.
He said the suspects were allegedly negotiating the sale of
a stolen solar street light when the police arrested them and recovered the
item.
“During interrogation, the suspects confessed to vandalising and stealing the solar street light earlier that day at Graceland Estate, Independence Layout, Enugu,” he said
Similarly, Ndukwe said operatives of the Abakaliki Road Police Division, acting on a distress alert from the Enugu State Command-and-Control Centre, arrested a 35-year-old man, Chukwudi Nwigbo, along Abakaliki Road, GRA, Enugu, at about 3:34am on September 24.
“The suspect and an accomplice, who fled the scene, were
detected by the security surveillance system while removing road traffic signs.
Many vandalised road signs bearing different inscriptions were recovered from
the suspect,” he said.
In another operation on September 15, operatives of the
command’s Violent Crime Response Unit, in collaboration with members of the
Neighbourhood Watch Group, arrested two men, Zubairu Hamanpedimso, 31, and
Mohamed Adamu, 21, for allegedly conspiring to vandalise and steal materials
belonging to the Enugu State Water Corporation.
According to Ndukwe, a bag containing iron materials, bolts
and nuts allegedly vandalised and stolen from the corporation was recovered
from the suspects.
He said all five suspects had been arraigned and remanded in
correctional custody pending further hearing.
Ndukwe added that efforts were ongoing to arrest other
accomplices still at large.
