Tuesday, September 1, 2026 - Tems has once again questioned the way African music is broadly labelled “Afrobeats,” arguing that the continent’s diverse sounds deserve to be recognised as different genres.
“I’m not an Afrobeats artiste,I classify my music as R&B every
time I release music but blogs keep calling it Afrobeats. I have noticed that
any music that comes out of Africa is automatically categorized as Afrobeats.”
The Grammy-winning singer says she classifies her own music
as R&B, while blogs often label it Afrobeats, adding that listeners will
eventually understand the difference.
