Thursday, August 20, 2026 - A yet-to-be-identified man was crushed to death in front of the OPIC corridor of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday after he was reportedly knocked down by a speeding truck.
According to eyewitnesses that the victim, a young adult
male, was attempting to cross the expressway from the Lagos-bound section to
the roadside along the OPIC corridor when the truck rammed into him.
The incident occurred a few minutes before 1pm, leaving the
victim’s body scattered across the road as vehicles struggled to navigate the
gory scene.
The truck driver was said to have fled the scene immediately
after the incident.
“He wanted to cross.
The truck knocked him down, rolled over him and sped off. This is a busy road,
and we have lost many lives here.
“This is why the government should provide a pedestrian
bridge to prevent avoidable loss of lives.”
As of the time our correspondent left the scene shortly
after 2pm on Wednesday, the victim’s body was still lying on the expressway.
Confirming the incident to our correspondent via WhatsApp on
Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance Agency,
Babatunde Akinbiyi, said operatives of the agency and the Amotekun Corps were
at the scene to manage the traffic caused by the crash.
Akinbiyi wrote, “A case of hit-and-run at OPIC bus stop
outbound Lagos on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
“The traffic is affected, but TRACE and AMOTEKUN operatives
are on the ground managing the resultant traffic, and efforts are ongoing for
the total evacuation of the body from the road and roadside.”
Sharing a further update on the removal of the body from the
expressway at about 6pm on Wednesday, Akinbiyi said the evacuation of “the
presumed dead from roads and roadsides was completed and taken to Olabisi
Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, by officials of the Federal Road
Safety Commission. The road is completely free for vehicular movement.”
