Saturday, August 15, 2026 - A Malaysian princess has wed a British motorsport figure in a celebration held at Kuala Lumpur's Shangri-La Hotel.
Princess Ilyana Alia of Pahang, 29, whose formal title is
Yang Amat Mulia Tengku Puteri Ilyana Alia, married 32-year-old Christopher
Froggatt on August 7.
The bride is the daughter of Sultan Abdullah, who reigned as
Malaysia's 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong from 2019 to 2024 and serves as the sixth
Sultan of Pahang. Her mother is the former actress Julia Rais.
Froggatt co-founded Tempesta Racing and races in the GT
World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup, one of the sport's premier
The couple, who have kept their relationship largely out of
the public eye, disclosed very little about their romance before the wedding.
The princess wore two gowns designed by celebrated Malaysian
couturier Datuk Radzuan Radziwill across the festivities.
For the solemnisation, she chose a romantic lace creation
featuring a high neckline, long sleeves and a fitted cut, styling her hair
half-up and half-down.
She wore a 19th-century antique diamond tiara from the royal family's holdings, crafted in a garland design with scrolling patterns and neoclassical leaf motifs drew from the Pahang royal collection, including a dazzling Art Deco diamond tiara belonging to Queen Azizah, paired with a diamond and emerald necklace and chandelier earrings to match.
For the principal ceremony, the princess processed through arrangements of ivory flowers towards the pelamin, the customary wedding dais.
The celebrations encompassed prayers, an exchange of rings and the formal presentation of marital gifts, honouring traditional customs.
Guests at the wedding included the Crown Prince of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah, alongside other members of the royal household. Pahang's Chief Minister, Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, was also present, as was Sheik Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan from the United Arab Emirates.
In an official statement, the Sultanate of Pahang expressed
its wish that the newlyweds "may be blessed with happiness, grace, and
lasting prosperity as they begin this new chapter together, building a home
founded on peace, love, and mercy."
The princess's family maintains deep ties to Britain.
Sultan Abdullah studied at Aldenham School in Elstree
between 1975 and 1977 before reading at Worcester College, Oxford.
He subsequently entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst
in 1978.
Commissioned as a second lieutenant and later promoted to
captain in 1980, Sultan Abdullah served with the Royal Armoured Corps,
eventually attaining the rank of brigadier general before concluding his
military career in 2004.
Froggatt's path into competitive racing was far from
conventional. Though he developed a love of cars, quad bikes and motocross as a
child, he did not begin racing competitively until he was 24.
According to his Tempesta Racing biography, the pivotal
moment came during a Ferrari high-performance driving experience at the
manufacturer's Fiorano test circuit in Italy, which he attended as a guest of a
close friend.
He went on to found Tempesta Racing in 2017 and has since
established himself as an accomplished GT competitor at the highest tiers of
endurance racing.
Malaysia operates a distinctive constitutional monarchy in
which the throne rotates among the rulers of nine hereditary royal states, with
the Conference of Rulers selecting a new king every five years.
The marriage represents a striking convergence of two
markedly different worlds — the centuries-old royal heritage of Pahang and the
high-octane realm of international motorsport.
