Monday, August 3, 2026 - Activist politician, Aisha Yesufu, on Sunday declared that the Archbishop Emeritus of Catholic Diocese of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, is never afraid to speak truth to those in power.
Yesufu said Onaiyekan is one of the few religious leaders
that is standing with Nigerians.
Posting on X, the activist wrote: “John Cardinal Onaiyekan
is one of the few Nigerian religious leaders that stands with the people and
never afraid to say truth to power.”
Her comment comes amid the close fire between Onaiyekan and
the Presidency over the Cardinal’s latest comment after visiting President Bola
Tinubu.
Onaiyekan had led the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria
to visit Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where they expressed
concerns over the country’s economy, insecurity and political climate.
Speaking after the visit, Onaiyekan had disclosed that
Tinubu disagreed with the assessment of the economy and security concerns
raised by members.
But, appearing on Arise Television’s Prime Time, Onaiyekan
said Tinubu rejected the bishops’ assessment, insisting that his administration
was on the right track.
The president had maintained that Nigeria’s economy has
recovered and is on a strong footing.
