Saturday, August 29, 2026 - Two people died in the early hours of Friday after a landslide hit Ikot Effanga along Old Odukpani Road in Calabar, Cross River State.
Police personnel were said to have responded to the
emergency situation.
The collapsed heap of refuse was said to have been swept
onto a building constructed in a valley, killing two occupants.
Confirming the incident, the Cross River State Police
Command said it was assessing the circumstances surrounding the incident, while
an investigation was ongoing.
The deceased were Nfon Imé and an unidentified woman. Their
remains have been recovered and deposited at the mortuary.
The police charged residents to remain calm and avoid
speculation as authorities work to establish the full circumstances of the
tragedy.
The incident came barely a month after a similar landslide
tragedy rocked Ikot Awatim community, where four children from the same family
lost their lives.
The two incidents have renewed concerns over the growing
danger posed by erosion and landslides in vulnerable communities across Cross
River State.
